TikTok ads reach 400,000 other apps | X turns your URL into a full campaign | Shopify's Sidekick redesigns your whole store
Need to Know News - October 8th, 2026

In this week's Need to Know News edition:

πŸ€– TikTok is pushing your ads onto 400,000 apps that aren't TikTok... while building a checkout button that never leaves the feed.

πŸ€– X will now turn your website address into a complete ad campaign in a few clicks.

πŸ€– Shopify now says a custom store takes twenty minutes of talking to an AI... and the whole-store redesign you'd have hired out is now a conversation.

And a whole lot more!

Shopify's Canvas Lets Sidekick Redesign Your Whole Store

When Ben Sehl built his brand Kotn on Shopify 12 years ago, he knew how to code, and a rough store still took him two weeks. He's a Shopify product director now, and he says a merchant can build a fully custom store in twenty minutes. The reason is Canvas, a new design surface where you build your store by talking to Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent.

Source: Shopify

πŸ“‹ The Details: Canvas lays every page of your store out on one screen, so instead of editing one template at a time, you can pan across the whole thing and see how it hangs together.

You can still click an element and change it yourself, but the idea is that you describe what you want and Sidekick writes the theme code, then takes its own screenshots to check the result before handing it back. It's rolling out over the coming days, and Shopify is honest that it's early... the old editor isn't going anywhere yet.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Sidekick has been making small edits for a while, over 25 million of them in the first half of 2026, but always one section at a time. Canvas promotes it to whole-store redesigns, which until now meant hiring a developer or living with a template.

⚑ Your Move: When Canvas shows up in your admin, tell Sidekick in one sentence how you want the store to feel and ask it to redo your homepage. Then judge the result against what a freelancer would have charged you for.

Meta Gives Its Ad Assistant a Memory and Tests Letting It Build Campaigns

Meta spent Tuesday at Advertising Week moving more of the ad buyer's job into a chat window. The business assistant inside Ads Manager now remembers what you tried last quarter and the goals you've told it, and a version in testing goes further, planning campaigns and changing budgets when you ask. Meta says advertisers who already follow its recommendations see 5% more conversions at the same cost.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Not all of this is live yet, so here's where things stand. The piece you can use today is Customer Lifecycle Strategy, which lets you tell Meta a campaign is for acquisition, and it then suggests which existing customers to exclude so you stop paying to reach people who already buy from you.

By the end of the year, you'll be able to describe your ideal customer in plain English inside Detailed Targeting instead of scrolling through interest lists.

Further out, Meta is testing an import that pulls your brand guidelines from whatever AI tool you keep them in, and a Shopify checkout that lets someone buy inside a Messenger chat with your business agent.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: The useful connection is that Ads Creative Studio's performance insights now feed directly into the assistant. The tool that tells you which hook worked last month can draft the next campaign around it, in the same conversation.

⚑ Your Move: Flag your next acquisition campaign under Customer Lifecycle Strategy and let it build the exclusion list. Then compare that list to the one you'd have built by hand, and see what it missed.

TikTok Ads Spread to 400,000 Apps as Checkout Moves Into the Feed

Fifty-four million Americans have bought something after watching a TikTok, according to a report TikTok commissioned from PF Global, and Monday's Advertising Week announcements are all about shortening that walk from video to purchase.

Buy Direct puts a one-click checkout right in the For You feed, and a Shopping Assistant sits alongside it to answer sizing and shipping questions before you commit.

πŸ“‹ The Details: The reach play is TikTok Ad Network, which is now open to US advertisers inside Ads Manager and pushes your campaigns onto nearly 400,000 outside apps. Then there's the agent side. TikTok's MCP connector, the link that lets an AI assistant run your campaigns for you, now plugs into Claude, Perplexity, and Manus, and TikTok says the number of advertisers using it grew 200% over the summer.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: GMV Max, the automated ad buyer for TikTok Shop, is about to get a better sense of what things actually cost you. It will start subtracting affiliate commissions, coupons, and referral fees before deciding where to push spend, so the return it chases sits closer to the one on your P&L.

πŸ“‘ Watch For: TikTok gave no launch dates for Buy Direct or the Shopping Assistant, so the first real signal is a merchant showing off a live checkout in the feed.

Zendesk's CEO Let Muse Haggle His Bills and Saved $3,105

Zendesk CEO Tom Eggemeier sells AI agents to businesses, and last month, when Meta dared Muse users to save $1,000, he handed the agent his household bills. In five days, he told TNW's podcast, it cut about $2,000 a year from his internet and TV bill and another $1,000 from his mobile plan. He made one phone call himself.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Zendesk's own numbers are bigger. Eggemeier expects about $400 million in AI revenue this year, up from near zero in 2024, and most of it comes from AI agents that customers pay for only when one actually resolves a ticket.

He's going further, too. A plan he's tested with about 100 customers drops seat licenses entirely and charges per resolution, whether a person or an AI closed it, and he says it rolls out shortly.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: He also expects personal agents talking to company agents to make up more than half of customer interactions within two years, which means the next voice on your support line may be software, haggling the way Muse haggled with his cable company.

πŸ“‘ Watch For: Zendesk's per-resolution pricing going wide. Once support bills track closed tickets instead of seats, the push to let agents close more of them is built into the invoice.

Suno Now Reads Your Words Aloud Over Music It Writes Itself

Suno, the AI music maker, has started working with words. Its new Speech model takes a poem, a pep talk, or a friend's text message and reads it aloud over music it composes to match, all as one track. The team admits it built the thing partly to give ordinary voice notes "unnecessarily epic scores."

πŸ“‹ The Details: Using it feels like the rest of Suno. You type what you want said, describe the voice and the musical style, and out comes spoken audio with its own soundtrack.

Suno calls it the first audio model to generate voice and music as one piece, and after a month of testing with a small group, the beta is now open to everyone. Beta means beta, though... Suno warns that a British accent can drift to Australia mid-sentence.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: A narrated product story, or a guided meditation for your wellness brand, now takes one prompt instead of a voice actor plus a music license.

⚑ Your Move: Paste your best customer review into Speech, ask for a warm narrator over something cinematic, and listen for whether it could run as a Story ad.

Claude Haiku 5.5 Costs 75% Less, Outscores GPT-6 Luna

Anthropic's smallest Claude model got its 5.5 upgrade on Wednesday, and the headline number is the price. Haiku 5.5 costs around 75% less to run than Haiku 4.5, by Anthropic's math, and the discount didn't cost it any brains.

On GDPval-AA, a benchmark of real professional tasks, it scored 1620, which is more than double the old Haiku and ahead of OpenAI's budget model, GPT-6 Luna, at 1437.

Source: Anthropic

πŸ“‹ The Details: The new rates are $0.10 per million tokens in and $0.50 out, as long as your prompt stays under 100,000 tokens, which Anthropic says covers 90% of what people send Haiku anyway.

It's live today on every major cloud. And for the first time, a Haiku comes with an effort dial, so when a task needs more thinking you can turn it up and pay a little more, and when it doesn't, you leave it cheap.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: This is the tier of model that does the unglamorous work, reading support tickets and tagging leads, and HubSpot's early test says it's finally good at it. Running Haiku 5.5 on CRM chores like spotting stale records, HubSpot got 92.8%, the best score it has seen from any small model. So the jobs you'd automate at volume just got cheaper and more reliable in the same week.

⚑ Your Move: If you're on a Max or Team plan, a monthly API credit lands this week, anywhere from $100 to $500. Spend the first one asking Haiku 5.5 to read last month's support transcripts and pull out the five complaints you hear most.

L'OrΓ©al Made Its 20 Most Senior Executives Build an Ad With AI

A product search that used to take a few minutes now takes 11, because the shopper is chatting with an AI about it. That's the change L'OrΓ©al's chief digital and marketing officer, Asmita Dubey, told Fortune she's rebuilding the company's marketing engine around.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Almost 20% of L'OrΓ©al's marketing investment is now AI-led, and the group is already testing ads inside Google's AI Overviews. But Dubey's real focus is the unglamorous layer underneath, what she calls the "pipes and plumbing."

That means standardizing ad accounts and product data across Google and Meta, and structuring brand and scientific content so an AI system can actually read it. To make sure her leadership understood what they were asking for, she had L'OrΓ©al's 20 most senior executives each create an ad with AI, start to finish.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Her example is a sunscreen. A commerce protocol can hand an AI 100,000 SKUs, and all it learns is SPF 50. The context someone actually uses it in, the thing a brand is famous for, still has to come from you.

⚑ Your Move: Run her exercise on your own leadership this month: one ad each, built with AI from start to finish. Dubey's reasoning is that until they've done it themselves, they can't picture how it works.

X Lift Turns a Website Address Into a Finished Ad Campaign

Type your URL into X Ads Manager and walk away with a campaign. That's X Lift, which X unveiled at Advertising Week New York for businesses that have never advertised there. The AI reads your site, generates a set of ad images and copy, and builds the campaign with targeting included, leaving you to set a budget and approve the draft.

πŸ“‹ The Details: X calls Lift the first of a planned suite for smaller advertisers, and it follows June's measurement updates, which were built so a shop without a developer could still track conversions. The company says self-serve advertisers grew 50% in Q3 over last year, and its poster child is giv soft butter, a brand X says now gets about 75% of its sales from the platform at more than 4x return on ad spend.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: The setup grind that kept small shops off X, the targeting and the creative, now happens before you've typed more than a URL. That fits how xAI's ad chief, Monique Pintarelli, has framed every one of these updates: for small advertisers rather than enterprise accounts.

⚑ Your Move: Feed Lift your homepage and treat the draft as a free audit... if the AI can't tell what you sell from your site, neither can a first-time visitor.

AI Agents Now Submit 1 in 6 Meta Ad Batches on Ads Uploader

Plenty of platforms now let an AI agent run your Meta ads. Ads Uploader, a bulk-upload tool for Meta, is one of the first to say how often anyone actually does. Its own unaudited count for September: 17.5% of the 36,289 batches it processed came from Claude or ChatGPT wired directly into the service, which works out to roughly 212 a day.

πŸ“‹ The Details: A batch is a single submission of ads to Meta, and the agent label tracks only the door it came through, not how much a human was involved. So a campaign an agent drafted and a person approved line by line still counts as agent-made. Founder Chris Pollard says that's how most customers start, and once they've watched the agent get the details right a few times, they let it run on its own.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Ads Uploader's terms put every ad on the account holder, and they warn that "any configuration error can multiply across all ads." The same agent that spares you the setup can mis-set 300 ads in one go, and the paperwork says that's your problem.

πŸ“‘ Watch For: October's count. The release gives no earlier month to compare against, so the second reading is the first one that shows whether 17.5% is climbing.

🧡 The Thread: Meta and TikTok both widened their agent connectors this week... this is the first count of anyone using one.

GPT-6 Reaches Free ChatGPT With Answers That Come as Interactive Tools

Ask ChatGPT to split a dinner bill five ways and it now hands you a working bill splitter, built on the spot inside the chat. That's Intelligent UI, the centerpiece of the GPT-6 rollout OpenAI began on Wednesday for ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users. Each answer now takes whatever shape the model thinks fits, from plain text to a tool with buttons you can press.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Paid tiers, Plus through Enterprise, got it first in the Chat tab, and Free and Go users follow from Thursday. Free plans run on GPT-6 Luna and paid plans on GPT-6 Sol, both tuned for everyday conversation. The other upgrade is speed.

ChatGPT now starts answering while it's still thinking, and OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant begins its reply 44% sooner than the old model on questions that need a web search.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: When a prospect asks ChatGPT to compare products, the answer can now arrive as a side-by-side with tappable buttons instead of paragraphs. OpenAI's own demo turned a dinner-party prompt into a shopping list that resizes itself by guest count, which is the kind of thing your product page never does.

⚑ Your Move: Ask ChatGPT to build an ROI calculator for your offer, using your real numbers. If it beats the one on your landing page, you've got a free prototype.
