Need to Know News - September 17th, 2026

12 creators, 5M to 100M views for Poke. | Pinterest sells ads on photo searches. | A ChatGPT co-inventor's AI can't make things up.
Need to Know News - September 17th, 2026

In this week's Need to Know News edition:

πŸ€– Twelve creators took an iMessage AI assistant from five million views to 100 million... and the agency behind it shares the exact format swap that did it.

πŸ€– Pinterest just made it possible to advertise to someone who searched with a photo instead of words... right at the moment they're deciding what to buy.

πŸ€– A ChatGPT co-inventor says chat is the wrong tool for most business decisions... so he built an AI that can't make things up and runs up to 200x faster.

And a whole lot more!

ChatGPT Sends Shopify Stores 5x the Traffic Your Analytics Shows

Four out of five visits ChatGPT sends a Shopify store land in analytics labeled as direct traffic. Aimerce measured referrals and orders across 1,000-plus stores, and once it counted those visits properly, ChatGPT's share of pageviews nearly doubled in a year... still a tenth of a percent of traffic, yet the fastest-growing source it can see.

πŸ“‹ The Details: ChatGPT strips the referrer on most outbound clicks and appends utm_source=chatgpt.com instead, so referrer-only tracking caught 18.2% of visits and read the year as flat.

Counted correctly, share went from 0.0564% to 0.1111%, and the jump landed in August on both the traffic data and a separate order record. Those orders carried a $75.46 median against $60.25 for everything else.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: If your channel report says ChatGPT sends you nothing, the report is measuring wrong, and since the undercount grew from 68.1% to 81.8% in a year, it gets worse the longer you wait.

⚑ Your Move: Build one analytics segment matching referrer OR utm_source containing chatgpt, then rerun the last 13 months. Aimerce calls that rule the whole trick.

Meta finally put a price on the link in an organic post. Meta One folds the Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus subscriptions into one service, and its new creator and business tiers sell tools small brands have been asking for... starting at $14.99 a month and climbing to $499.

Source: Meta

πŸ“‹ The Details: Essential ($14.99) buys a verified badge, a verified WhatsApp channel, an enhanced profile, and more Meta Business Agent replies. Advanced ($49.99) is where the good stuff sits: links in organic posts and Reels, Stories scheduled up to 30 days out, exportable analytics, and team access without sharing your password. Expert ($149) and Max ($499) cover teams running the agent at scale, all live globally now.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Reach on Meta is still free. The two features most likely on your wish list, the link and the analytics export, both cost $49.99 a month.

⚑ Your Move: Before subscribing, write down what you pay a scheduling tool today for the two things Advanced adds, links and 30-day scheduling. Under $50 and the math is done.

Pinterest Puts Ads Inside Its 80 Billion Monthly Searches

Most of Pinterest's 80 billion monthly searches start with an image, more than half are commercial, and until this week that pile of intent had no ad format built for it. At Pinterest Presents, the company unveiled Visual Search Ads, a paid placement in search results and Pin closeups where you bid for the top response while someone is still deciding.

Source: Pinterest

πŸ“‹ The Details: It heads into beta for eligible advertisers in every Pinterest ad market over the coming weeks and plugs into Performance+, Pinterest's automated buying suite. Performance+ picked up Priority Products the same day, which tells the automation which items to push during a launch, along with self-serve A/B testing.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: A shopper who photographs a lamp is telling Pinterest exactly what they want without typing a word you could have bid on, and this format lets you show up for that anyway, with a link to your site.

⚑ Your Move: Ask your Pinterest rep about beta eligibility, and while you wait, load your Q4 hero products into Priority Products so the automation favors them when the format opens.

Claude Stops Asking Where Your Task Belongs

The complaint Anthropic kept hearing about Claude Cowork was the decision that came before the work, chat or Cowork. As of Tuesday the two are one Claude. Hand it a report due at noon and Claude works out what the task needs, keeps going after you close your laptop, and hands the result back in the same conversation.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Claude Docs and Claude Slides arrived the same day, and Claude Design now works inside conversations, so a deck drafts in the chat, exports to PowerPoint or PDF, and lives at one shareable link, all in beta on paid plans. The merge itself reaches Pro and Max first, over the coming weeks, then Team and Free.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: One conversation produces the weekly report and the five leadership slides, so they agree without you reconciling them. Put it on a Monday schedule and next week's version starts on its own.

⚑ Your Move: On Pro or Max, give Claude the next report you'd normally build yourself, ask for a doc plus slides, and check progress from your phone on the way in.

Google Wants Your Product Feed Fixed Before the Holiday AI Rush

Holiday shoppers are asking AI what to buy, and Google spent Tuesday telling retailers how to be the answer. Merchant Shopping VP Ashish Gupta rolled out three updates and one piece of homework.

New Conversational AI In YouTube Ads (Source: Google)

πŸ“‹ The Details: AI performance insights in Merchant Center is now live in the U.S., Canada, Australia, India, and New Zealand, showing your share of voice across AI Mode and AI Overviews. U.S. retailers can also put Business Agent inside YouTube ads in beta, so viewers ask questions inside the video.

The homework: in a lululemon test, conversational attributes the brand submitted showed up in relevant AI Mode recommendations half the time.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Google's AI reads the plain-language details you write about a product, like who it's for, back to shoppers... and lululemon's 50% came with the brand supplying them.

⚑ Your Move: Your share of voice is already sitting in Merchant Center. Check it, then submit conversational attributes for your top 20 gift products.

🧡 The Thread: Google's report scores AI Mode and AI Overviews only; on Aimerce's Shopify data, ChatGPT sends 95.6% of assistant-attributed orders.

How 12 Creators Got Poke 100 Million Views in 12 Weeks

Poke, the AI assistant inside iMessage, killed its own creator program in early 2026 after three months and five million views produced nothing the founders could measure. Two months later, agency byNAME took over with 12 creators and a different playbook, and the same product pulled 100 million views over 12 weeks.

πŸ“‹ The Details: The old program ran text-over-B-roll, the paragraph-caption format common across consumer tech UGC. byNAME swapped in 30-to-60-second videos built around one viewer insight, with the product folded into an argument instead of demoed. It started with five creators, grew to 12, and stopped, splitting them into two cohorts because big group calls push individuals to the margins.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Zak Usac, who ran content, puts a 200-creator program at roughly 30 million views over 90 days against these 12 at 100 million, and credits the gap to coaching each creator individually rather than pasting one brief into a Discord.

⚑ Your Move: Co-founder Seve Silvestre's advice: post from your own accounts first, find the angle that performs, then hire creators to scale that signal.

ChatGPT Now Lives Inside Word, Free Plan Included

Open Word, install one add-in from the Microsoft Marketplace, and ChatGPT sits in the sidebar drafting and editing the document you already have open. OpenAI's ChatGPT for Word is out globally on every plan, Free through Enterprise, and the same add-in covers Excel and PowerPoint.

πŸ“‹ The Details: It pulls context from connected apps like Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox, and it runs skills, saved instructions for recurring jobs like contract review. Two limits matter, though.

Add-in chats are separate from your ChatGPT history, so nothing it remembers about you carries over, and tables and charts may need hand-fixing afterward. OpenAI's own warning is that it can make unintended edits, so keep a copy.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: The proposal you're already writing in Word gets an editor that can read your Outlook thread with that client, without a copy-paste round trip into a browser tab.

⚑ Your Move: Install it and run OpenAI's own prompt on your longest live proposal: review the draft for inconsistent terms and unclear language, and list suggested revisions. See what it flags before you let it touch the file.

Canva Bets Craft Gets More Valuable as AI Floods the Feed

There's a loud argument that AI makes skilled creative work worth less. Canva opened its ProSuite announcement by saying the opposite... the more generic content floods in, the more real skill stands out. The suite wires Affinity, Cavalry, Flourish, and Leonardo together, with dozens of upgrades to the two tools pros actually live in.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Affinity gets its long-requested Blend Tool and a Claude AI connector that handles batch edits and print prep in plain English. InDesign import is in, and a Data Merge feature now connects Affinity to Canva Sheets. Cavalry's headline is still coming: you pick which parts of an animation a Canva user can edit while the core scene stays locked.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: The "can you change the date on this" requests that land on your designer are exactly what the locked-scene editing and the Sheets merge remove. Affinity and Cavalry stay free, too.

⚑ Your Move: If your team lives in Canva while your designer keeps InDesign files around, open Affinity, import one, and see whether the Brand Kit link survives the trip.

Heidi Klum, 53, Stars Beside Her Twenty-Something Self for s.Oliver

Two Heidi Klums walk through the new s.Oliver campaign, and one of them hasn't existed for roughly thirty years. The German fashion brand and agency Jung von Matt Neckar used face-swap technology to put the 53-year-old model in the same frame as her twenty-something self, and CEO Johannes Rellecke is calling it a "surprising and previously unseen" way to tell the brand's story.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Production studio Tempo shot the film with Alex Feil directing, and photographer Rankin handled the stills, so this ran through a full traditional production with AI doing the one thing a camera can't. Muse by Clios' David Gianatasio scored the result honestly: somewhat creepy, absolutely convincing, and certain to provoke a reaction.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Any brand with a long-running face or founder now has the same option. This campaign shows it working at fashion-house polish, workflow disclosed.

⚑ Your Move: List the people your brand holds two decades of footage of. That archive is the raw material, and Gianatasio's rule applies: disclose the workflow, then let the idea get judged on its own.

A ChatGPT Co-Inventor Built a Model That Only Picks From a List

Diogo Almeida says his OpenAI work helped lead to ChatGPT, and he spent two years in stealth deciding chat was the wrong shape for most software. His startup TypeSafe AI opened early access to Jev this week, a model that never writes a sentence. Hand it context and a fixed menu of choices and it returns a decision with a confidence score.

πŸ“‹ The Details: Pricing is $0.042 per million input tokens with no charge for output, and TypeSafe reports responses in 70 to 500 milliseconds, since Jev scores options in parallel instead of typing tokens. The homepage's 193.6x speed and 444.6x cost claims come from four workflows the company built, judged against GPT-6 Astra and Fable 5.1 outputs rather than ground truth.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Lead scoring and ticket routing are pick-from-a-list decisions, and a model that can't stray outside the list can't invent a category, though whether it picks the right one is a question TypeSafe hasn't settled.

πŸ“‘ Watch For: An outside benchmark of Jev on labeled data, and a general-availability price, since TypeSafe admits its pricing is unproven.

Designers Doubled Their AI Tools, and Half Now Ship AI Code

A year ago designers were poking at AI on the side. Designer Fund and Foundation Capital went back to over 900 of them, and the survey's own title reads like a verdict: they're rebuilding around it. Designers now use twice as many off-the-shelf AI tools as in 2025, and half have pushed AI-generated code to production.

πŸ“‹ The Details: The report comes in three chapters, and the tools one carries a warning label: output quality is still the biggest complaint. The second chapter picks up the mood underneath the speed, where respondents describe skills atrophying and the loneliness of designing beside a model instead of a teammate.

Then teams: roles are blurring into PM and engineering work, yet few companies have touched performance reviews or hiring practices to match.

🎯 Why You Need to Know: Hire or brief a designer and the person across the table prototypes, writes code, and ships it, while their employer hasn't updated the job description yet.

πŸ“‘ Watch For: The video case studies. Sierra, Linear, Shopify, and Stripe are live; Anthropic, Notion, and Framer are marked coming soon.
